Big tournaments like the World Cup and the Euros are all wonderful to watch but they are also a great opportunity to improve your skills by learning from the stars you see on the pitch.
We have selected six players from EURO2020, and the skill they are outstanding for.
We have then selected a Coerver Coaching exercise that you can do at home that will help you improve the same skills.
First up is Karim Benzema, who is renowned for his finishing skills.
Player: Karim Benzema
Nationality: French
Club: Real Madrid
Position: Forward
Benzema is an exceptional finisher, and scored four goals at the Euros – including two against Portugal and two in the knockout round against Switzerland. Benzema finishes with both feet, so he’s a great example for younger players.
Here’s a clip of Benzema demonstrating “flash finishing” by scoring against Switzerland with his second touch in the penalty area.
Finishing is shooting at goal, and it is important because the more you improve your finishing, the more goals you will score for your team. Here are our top three tips for improving your finishing:
- Shooting technique is much like passing; try for accuracy rather than just power. To get accuracy, make sure you look up before you shoot.
- There is little space in the penalty area, so your first touch, “the Set Up”, needs to be quick and into space – like Benzema’s was in the clip above. At the same time, timing your run into the box is important; too early or too late, and your shooting chance may have gone.
- Keep your shot low; this makes it more difficult for the goalkeeper, especially when you aim for the corners.
Why not start with this exercise which can be found on our online subscription website, Coerver Players Club. This will help improve your set-up touch as well as your all-important finishing skills.
