Our fifth star of the Euros is England’s own Declan Rice, and we’ve picked him because of his excellent quick passing ability, which he showcased to great effect as England progressed all the way to the final. Quick passing is essential for moving the ball up the pitch so that you and your team-mates can start putting the 1v1 moves, killer passes, and finishing we covered in our earlier blogs into practice in attacking situations.
Player: Declan Rice
Nationality: English
Club: West Ham
Position: Midfielder
Declan Rice was superb for England in the Euros, starting every match and helping England play out from the back. It’s no surprise that he achieved a pass completion rate of 91%, and his “quick passing” – one and two touch exchanges – were excellent.
Quick passing is an important skill because it gives your opponents less time to close you down or intercept the ball, meaning you can set up chances more easily. Here are our top tips for improving your quick passing:
- Quick passing means one-touch or two-touch passing.
- Before you call for the ball, scan your surroundings so you can decide before you receive the ball what your next move will be.
- Once you pass the ball, move into a space to support your teammates so they have the option of passing back to you.
Why not start with this exercise which is taken from our online subscription website, Coerver Players Club. Watch the video below which will help with your passing as well as your speed and fitness. Player 1and Player 2 make first time passes with the right foot and as soon as either player makes a left foot pass, they leave the ball and Player 1 sprints around one cone and Player 2 around the other cone. First player back is the winner.
